"Got 'til It's Gone" is a song by American singer Janet Jackson, featuring American rapper Q-Tip and Canadian singer Joni Mitchell. It was released as the lead single from Jackson's sixth studio album, The Velvet Rope (1997).
"Got 'til It's Gone" is rumored to be produced by the hip hop collective The Ummah (composed of Q-Tip, J Dilla, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad) as contested many times by fans of the late producer J Dilla. In an interview,
J Dilla himself stated that he, Q-Tip, and Muhammad produced the original after Jackson met Q-Tip on the set of the 1993 film Poetic Justice. He also produced a remix of the song entitled Ummah Jay Dee's Revenge Mix.
The song is notable for its use of a sample from Joni Mitchell's song "Big Yellow Taxi", which originally appeared on her 1970 album Ladies of the Canyon. English singer Des'ree would later sue Jackson, stating that her 1991 single "Feel So High" was sampled on "Got 'til It's Gone". Subsequent releases containing the track would credit Des'ree as a co-writer.
Jackson has performed the song on many of her tours, including The Velvet Rope Tour, All for You Tour, and Rock Witchu Tour.
Rapper T.I.'s 2006 song "Why You Wanna" interpolates Q-Tip's vocals on "Got 'til It's Gone", using the refrain, "Now why you wanna go and do that?". Q-Tip featured on the remix to that song and the sentence is also similarly used in Q-Tip's verse in A Tribe Called Quest's hit-single Find A Way.
